Carry the Load Dallas Memorial March, an annual 20-hour event honoring fallen veterans, starts Sunday, May 24 and concludes on Memorial Day, May 25. Participants can walk for as little or as long as they’d like, according to the nonprofit’s website.
In order to ensure participant safety, several roads will close in Dallas starting this week. Here’s what we know.
Turtle Creek Boulevard will be closed from Maple Avenue to inside Reverchon Park starting at 6 a.m. Wednesday until 5 p.m. on Memorial Day. Turtle Creek Boulevard will also be closed from Maple Avenue to Fairmount Street from 8 a.m. Saturday to 3 p.m. on Memorial Day.
The route will only be on the Katy Trail from 5 p.m. Sunday to noon on Memorial Day. Water stops will be placed along the entire route for those participating in the march.
The march was started in 2011 by two veteran U.S. Navy SEALs, Stephen Holley and Clint Bruce, “who felt like the nation had forgotten the meaning of Memorial Day,” according to a news release from the city. The march has become a nationwide event.
Amplified outdoor sound will start at noon., with a 5-minute sound check at 11:50 a.m. on Saturday. A Dallas police officer will be on-site to help with noise control. The city of Dallas urges residents to call 911 with any complaints.
“We encourage all Americans to do something meaningful on Memorial Day, even if it is simply stopping for the moment of remembrance at 3 p.m. to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom,” the city of Dallas said in a news release.
