LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A Red Flag Warning remains in effect from 11 a.m. through 10 p.m. Monday, with a Wind Advisory in place from noon through 8 p.m. for much of the region.

The combination of strong winds, hot temperatures, very low relative humidity and extremely dry vegetation will create dangerous conditions for rapid wildfire growth and spread Monday afternoon.

Winds are already breezy this morning with sustained speeds of 20-25 mph from the south and south-southwest. A dryline currently positioned west of the forecast area across eastern New Mexico will move eastward throughout the day, crossing the I-27 corridor by noon and stalling in the eastern Rolling Plains this afternoon.

As the dryline moves east, conditions will deteriorate rapidly. Relative humidity values will drop to 15 percent or below by 10 a.m. along the western zones, eventually bottoming out at 5 percent or less this afternoon. Winds will veer to the southwest and strengthen, with gusts potentially reaching 50 mph.
Temperatures are expected to climb into the mid to upper 90s and lower triple digits, with critical to extremely critical fire danger developing across much of the region by Monday afternoon.

Across the entire forecast area, avoid any outdoor burning or activities that could spark a fire. Secure any loose outdoor items that could be blown around by strong winds. If you’re traveling, exercise caution on roadways as wind gusts could affect high-profile vehicles and blowing dust could drop visibility down to near 1/4 of a mile or less.

Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible Monday afternoon off of the Caprock, with additional chances for spotty showers along an overnight front moving into the area Monday night into Tuesday.
