LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – On Monday, Texas Tech Quarterback Brendan Sorsby filed an injunction against the NCAA seeking eligibility for the upcoming 2026 football season.
Texas Tech released a statement on Brendan Sorsby saying, “After finalizing an agreed-upon stipulation of facts between Texas Tech University, the NCAA and Brendan Sorsby, the University has declared Sorsby ineligible for competition. Texas Tech intends to quickly initiate the reinstatement process.”
Sorsby took an immediate leave of absence last month to be treated for a gambling addiction. Sorsby is currently ineligible to play for Texas Tech due to prior violations of the NCAA’s sports gambling rules.
NCAA student-athletes are strictly prohibited from betting on any sport in which the NCAA holds a championship, covering both professional and college sports.
Court documents state Sorsby never bet against his own team or players on his team and only bet on sports using public information.
The filing claims the NCAA’s position on gambling is “deeply hypocritical” and a “wholesale abandonment of its obligations and duties to promote the well-being” of Sorsby.
The filing states Sorsby suffers from a “clinically diagnosed” gambling disorder and is considered “a mental health condition.”
Court documents show he started betting legally in high school. The petition shows while he was in college, his gambling addiction extended to irregular competitions, like Turkish basketball and Romanian soccer.
Sorsby’s asking for a temporary injunction hearing by June 15, a week before he would have to decide whether to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft.
The NFL Supplement Draft is available to college players declared ineligible after the traditional draft deadline has passed. The deadline is June 22.
“By refusing to act on Mr. Sorsby’s reinstatement request in a timely manner, the NCAA has given him an impossible choice: either forfeit the NCAA eligibility he still wishes to maintain, or let the deadline pass and risking losing an entire year of competitive football,” the petition says.
The filing states NCAA rules typically call for reinstatement cases to be handled in about 48 hours once “necessary information” is in, and that Sorsby’s case has been stalled for weeks.
The NCAA has yet to make any decisions about his eligibility.
