SUNLAND PARK, N.M (KFOX14/CBS4) — SUNLAND PARK, N.M. (KFOX14/CBS4) — A large fire was seen burning next to Western Playland in Sunland Park, New Mexico, on Friday night, May 15.
In a statement posted on social media, the City of Sunland Park said the fire was caused by a professional fireworks display for Western Playland. According to the post, fallout debris from the fireworks finale landed in thick vegetation, and the fire spread quickly.
The standby crew required mutual aid from the El Paso Fire Department, West Valley Fire Department and Dona Ana County Public Safety DAFR. According to City of Sunland Park officials, a total of 33 personnel and 18 apparatus responded from the departments.
Out of an abundance of caution, the amusement park was evacuated, and nearby residents were asked to avoid the area.

The responding personnel were out to the scene at 9:25 p.m. and had the fire under control by 12:39 a.m.
City of Sunland Park officials shared that all life and nearby property were protected, including Jenson Equine Hospital, which had 20 horses on site. All that burned was thick vegetation in the bosque area, officials say.
