The Houston area could receive rain every day through Memorial Day on Monday, with projected totals between 4-6 inches, according to the National Weather Service’s Houston-Galveston Office.
As of Tuesday morning, when rain began falling in the region, the weather service forecasted the potential for severe weather Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Tuesday’s forecast showed that areas north of Interstate 10 had a slight chance for severe weather overnight, while the majority of Harris County down to Galveston County had a marginal risk.
The weather service is warning of a high risk of rip currents along the coast of Galveston until Wednesday evening.

CenterPoint Energy, which supplies electricity to much of the Houston area, announced it had activated its emergency operations center and was monitoring the potential impacts of this week’s storms. At approximately noon Tuesday, CenterPoint was reporting just over 2,000 customers were without power across the greater Houston area.

NWS meteorologist Janice Maldonado said there is also a slight risk for isolated hail.
“There is also a risk of a few of these storms to become strong to severe,” Maldonado said. “If they do become severe, damaging wind, wind gusts are the main threat. There is also a risk of small hail with these storms.”

This first round of storms is expected to bring 1-3 inches of rain across Harris County, according to Maldonado. However, storms are forecast to return Wednesday evening into Thursday.
“Keep in mind that rain will continue throughout the week,” she said. “We will have multiple chances of precipitation, rain and thunderstorms every day. … It will continue on Friday and also into Memorial Day weekend.”
Maldonado said Tuesday that it was too early to tell which day may see the heaviest rainfall, adding there is the potential for rainfall on Memorial Day.
“Between today and Sunday, the forecast rainfall total is between 4 to 6 inches,” she said. “But again, that is not going to fall [all] at once. … Just pay attention to the forecast, especially towards the weekend here, because it’s a long weekend.”
As of Tuesday, the weather service had not issued any flood watches or flood advisories for the Houston area. Forecasts will be updated as the week progresses.
