EANES, Texas — The Eanes Independent School District revealed details of its ambitious solar energy program during a press conference on Thursday at West Ridge Middle School in Austin.
The initiative was projected to generate approximately $700,000 in annual savings, addressing a significant portion of the district’s $3.3 million budget shortfall.
Eanes ISD had been grappling with rising operational costs and stagnant state funding, prompting the district to explore innovative and sustainable solutions. As part of the 2023 Bond program, the community approved a districtwide solar initiative aimed at reducing energy costs and promoting environmental responsibility.

“The solar energy program represents a win for both our district and our community,” said Chris Scott, Eanes ISD Chief Financial Officer. “By leveraging $3.5 million in Austin Energy rebates and $2.5 million in federal incentives, we’ve expanded our solar capacity and are now saving approximately half of the district’s annual electricity costs. It’s a clear example of fiscal responsibility and innovation working together to benefit our schools.”
Solar arrays were installed across eight Eanes ISD campuses, with the systems expected to generate significant long-term savings that would be reinvested into district operations. Axis Solar of Austin, selected through a competitive RFP process, led the installation project. The company’s owners are Eanes ISD residents and active members of the Eanes Elementary PTO and Eanes Education Foundation, adding a layer of trust and collaboration to the partnership.
The success of the Eanes ISD solar initiative garnered attention across Texas, with many viewing it as a model for achieving financial stability while advancing renewable energy goals. The project recently won the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Austin Impact Award for Most Influential Project.
At 4.75 megawatts, it is the largest educational solar installation in Austin, surpassing efforts by UT, ACC, and AISD.
