Severe Overnight Storms Leave Damage, Cleanup Efforts Underway in Freer

Cleanup continues in Freer after overnight storms brought down trees, damaged equipment and led to a school closure due to power issues.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Communities across the region are still cleaning up after severe overnight storms left a path of damage, including significant impacts in Freer.

The storms moved through the area Monday night, hitting quickly and leaving residents dealing with downed trees and scattered debris within minutes.

“I had a mesquite tree laying over the bed of my truck. Had to get it out of there so I could go to work,” said resident Saul Pineda, who said limbs narrowly missed his vehicle and home.

Pineda said the storm damage extended beyond his property, affecting work operations as well.

“We got the news that one of our working partners’ workover rig fell over. That’s catastrophic,” he said. “That type of thing sets a company back—sets back time—sets back work.”

The incident is expected to cost the company hundreds of thousands of dollars, according to Pineda.

Freer ISD also felt the impact, canceling classes due to minor wind damage and multiple downed trees. Officials said there was little structural damage but some campuses lost power, including the junior high, due to suspected transformer issues.

District leaders say repairs are underway, and if power is not fully restored, plans are in place to continue instruction for students.

Despite the widespread cleanup, officials say recovery efforts are ongoing as crews work to restore normal operations across the community.
