FREE This spring celebration offers a weekend of live performances, visual art showcases and more. Artists will paint live on a dozen surfaces, including walls and storage containers, and guests can peruse a number of art exhibitions. Local food trucks and other vendors will be on hand to ensure that guests find plenty to eat and drink. Throughout the family- and pet-friendly event, performers will play live music from several genres — including rock, pop, jazz and R&B. Dallas musician Dezi 5 will close out the festival with a performance of Texas soul music on May 24 at 4:45 p.m.

SCARBOROUGH RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL
LAST CHANCE Travel back in time to a 16th-century English village as the Scarborough Renaissance Festival returns for its 45th year. The Waxahachie festival features full-contact jousting tournaments, a mermaid lagoon, rides, games and entertainment on 20 stages. Dozens of performers add to the atmosphere, as do the many visitors who dress up for the event. Handmade crafts are available in the festival’s 200 shops, and artisans are there to demonstrate their skills. Plenty of food and drink options are available, and 16 pubs and taverns cater to the 21-and-up crowd. A colorful parade procession marches through the 25-acre village at 1 p.m. daily. Each weekend has a special theme; May 23-25 features a music- and magic-filled celebration as “The Last Huzzah!” closes out this year’s festival. Experience six beautifully preserved historic homes along with iconic landmarks in downtown Waxahachie during this annual event June 6-7. The Ellis County Master Gardener Butterfly Garden will be open for exploration, as will the Ellis County Women’s Building, celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. A return of the Echoes of the Past Ghost Tour on June 6 is planned, in which participants are allowed to explore the Ellis County Museum after dark using real paranormal investigation equipment.
