LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Dozens of Lubbock fifth graders received new bikes Wednesday for their perfect attendance this school year.
Members of the Rotary Club of Lubbock picked the bikes up Wednesday morning. Students across Lubbock ISD’s 26 elementary schools who ended the year with no absences were entered for a drawing. Two students, a boy and a girl, at each school were then picked for the special prize.
LISD Superintendent Kathy Rollo said it’s important for kids to be in school every day they’re able to be in school and this is a way to incentivize that.
“When students are absent or have chronic absenteeism they miss out on learning and it’s really hard to fill in those gaps when kids are absent a lot, so this is just a way to support learning for students,” Rollo said.
This is the 10th consecutive year the Rotary Club of Lubbock has led this project.
