After 13 years, The Nook at 4701 Calhoun Rd Suite 150 is no longer open. While Nook’s owners haven’t made a formal announcement on social media, there is a note on the door saying its “chapter has officially come to a close.”
“We want to sincerely thank every student, faculty member, alumnus, staff member, and guest who supported us throughout the years. The memories, conversations, and community built here meant more than words can express,” the note on Nook’s door read.
“Most importantly, we want to thank our student-led team whose passion, leadership, creativity, and hard work helped shape The Nook into what it became. This cafe was built by students, and their impact will continue far beyond these walls.”
It’s unclear when The Nook’s final day of service was, but chatter about its closure circulated on Reddit and Instagram days after the university’s spring commencement ceremony. Chron has reached out to the cafe for more information.
UH alumni Derek Shaw and Sam Wijnberg opened the Nook in 2013. The Cougar, the university’s newspaper, reported the pair had a vision to make the coffee shop they wished they had on campus when they were students.Its menu featured a variety of locally-sourced desserts, pastries, beer and wine and, of course, coffee. The cafe partnered with Katz Coffee, coincidentally also founded by fellow UH alum Avi Katz.
