LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The City of Lubbock plans to start construction this summer to remove the historic brick on Broadway.
Voters approved the plan to replace the brick between Avenues Q and E with concrete and modern brick pavers as part of the 2024 road bond.
“By the time we get done with this project, it’ll be a much smoother ride than it is today, but the brick pavers will give a nod to that historic nature of our Broadway street,” city engineer John Turpin said.
The city plans to start construction with utility work the week after the Fourth on Broadway Parade in July. The historic Broadway brick will be replaced with concrete in the straightaways and modern brick pavers in the intersections.
Construction phases and traffic impact
Turpin said the project will be split up into four phases, each about a quarter of a mile long. Each of those sections will also be a split-phase, so work is only being completed on one lane at a time.
“So there will be a north half worked on, and while that north half is worked on the traffic will travel on the south half,” Turpin said.
That traffic will only be one-way, while drivers in the other lane will take a short detour.
“So, we’ve been very concentrated on as little disruption to our businesses as possible because we know this is an area that thrives off of business and we want to encourage people to still come down here to this area,” Turpin said.
Contractor selection and cost
The city has chosen its contractor for the project, Ti-Zack Concrete out of Minnesota. That is still awaiting council approval, which is expected June 9. Turpin said the city has had good experience with them.
“We will not let this contractor show up, tear up the street, and then leave the project. That’s not going to happen,” Turpin said.
$16 million were originally set aside for Broadway as part of the 2024 road bond, but the cost has now increased to $17.3 million.
“The good thing about what the voters allowed us to vote on, we did have a contingency fund set back specifically in these cases where the streets come in potentially over, that we will still be able to perform everything that we told our taxpayers that we would do,” Turpin said.
The city expects the project to take two years. Turpin said the inconvenience will be worth it.
“You know, honestly I hope that the Broadway will continue to spur downtown growth as well as when the park’s done. It’ll be just a beautiful project. I truly believe it’ll be a beautiful project. It’ll be a sidewalk-to-sidewalk, brand new look,” Turpin said.
The city plans to store the historic brick at its Canyon landfill site. Turpin said while some bricks may get damaged in the removal process, they are going to try to preserve as many as they can.
