If you’re out shopping for supplies for the Memorial Day weekend at Lowe’s Market, you might consider donating to the Moore McDonald VFW Post 8967.
Members of the post and Auxiliary to the Post will have a table set up in the lobby collecting donations and giving away American flags.
Post and auxiliary members will be on hand from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday to Sunday, May 22 through 24.
The funds raised during the weekend will be split between the post members and the auxiliary to the post for their programs.
Post members will use the money collected for the annual Care and Share Christmas Dinner Program. Auxiliary members will use the funds to benefit their various programs.
Every year since 1991, the Care and Share Program has given gift cards to Port Aransans in need to purchase the makings for their Christmas dinners.
At Christmas in 2025, the post gave gift cards for Christmas dinners to 125 individuals and families.
Also, until Sunday, May 31, shoppers may add money to their total purchases at the checkouts. The money from the “rounding up” also will go to the Care and Share Program.
The Care and Share Christmas Dinner Program is one of the many ways the VFW post helps the community.
“It is really important to the VFW that we collect as much money as we can so that everyone can get the assistance they need to make their Christmases happy,” said Harold Gage, post chaplain.
