LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A local nonprofit is helping women on the South Plains start over and rebuild their lives.
Kimberly Humphreys, a current resident at New Home Legacy for Women, struggled with addiction for 25 years and said she knew she needed to change.
“It’s possible that I could be in a grave. I was so broken that I had gotten to the point where that didn’t even concern me. I wasn’t even bothered with the fact that something bad could happen to me,” Humphreys said.
New Home Legacy for Women is a 15-month program to give women a second chance.
“I had hit a sufficient bottom. God found me where I was and he brought me to the legacy home and the rest is now,” Humphreys said.
Humphreys will graduate from the New Home Legacy program in June and then from college.
“Two different caps, two different gowns, two different tassels within two days. It’s a lot of twos,” Humphreys said.
Michelle Harper, the program coordinator, said this wouldn’t be possible without the community’s support.
It also wouldn’t be possible without a graduation gift.
“Just look at her face. Just look at her face when she comes out of the Drug Emporium. Nothing beats that,” Harper said.
NHL is a nonprofit, so gifts like this don’t come easy.
“We are a nonprofit and we rely heavily on the community,” Harper said.
Harper said if you need confirmation that NHL is making a change, herself and Humphreys are a testament of their work.
Humphreys said she is looking forward to carrying the message of God, the message NHL spreads and more on the rest of her journey
“The home loved me and accepted me for who I was when I didn’t even know who I was. They helped me find out who I was. And the community here is amazing. The graduates, the staff, the volunteers, everyone that walks through that door pours out nothing but genuine love on us. They help you through the hard times and they’re with you in the good times. The graduates come in and out of the doors. It’s a home,” Humphreys said.
