LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A collaborative effort between federal, state and local law enforcement is underway in Lubbock, targeting violent criminals through the summer.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Texas announced Operation Hub City Shield, which aims to address violent crime on the South Plains. Lubbock saw a nearly 20 percent decrease in violent crimes from 2024 to 2025.
“Through this operation, we are targeting violent criminals, human traffickers, drug dealers and those who commit firearm offenses,” said Ryan Rabould, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Texas. “It has already been an extraordinary success.”
Since March, the Department of Justice has charged 50 defendants with various violent crimes.
Dequan Willard and Traylin Hicks are accused of conspiracy to distribute cocaine and cocaine derivatives. They were previously charged and convicted of drug dealing, but were released from federal prison in January 2025.
Markquis Tates was charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. DPS received a tip that someone was selling fentanyl at a hotel in Lubbock. Troopers arrested Tates there in April.
“No one agency can tackle these issues alone,” said Nicholas Powell, resident in charge of Caprock HIDTA and DEA. “When federal, state and local law enforcement work together, share intelligence and coordinate efforts, we’re much more effective at targeting violent offenders, dismantling criminal organizations, and holding those responsible accountable.”
Sean Malecha, the acting U.S. Marshall for the Northern District of Texas, said 44 felony arrests were made in April alone during this operation.
Hub City Shield will continue through the summer.
“It’s a safe space, it’s a wonderful place, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to stop,” Rabould said. “My job and the job of the folks up here with me is to continue to protect every single person that’s in Lubbock, and so any crime that happens to anyone, we’re going to go after. It’s to let the folks know out there that if you’re thinking about hurting someone, we’re gonna come get you.”
