Much of South Texas, including the San Antonio metro area, parts of the Hill Country and the Interstate 35 corridor will be under a flood watch from Friday night to Monday night, the National Weather Service said Thursday. Forecasters cited worries about expected heavy rainfall during the Memorial Day weekend that could cause flash flooding.
The flood watch, which would begin at 7 p.m. Friday and end at 7 p.m. Monday, applies to these San Antonio metro area counties: Bexar, Bandera, Medina, Comal, Guadalupe, Frio, Kendall and Wilson.
Austin metro area counties under the flood watch are: Travis, Hays, Williamson, Bastrop and Caldwell. Hill Country counties affected include: Burnet, Blanco, Llano, Kerr and Gillespie.
Communities under the flood watch include Austin, Hondo, Bandera, Boerne, New Braunfels, Pearsall, Fredericksburg, Floresville, Llano, Georgetown, Kerrville, Pleasanton, San Antonio, Blanco, Seguin, Gonzales, Bastrop, Karnes City, Giddings, San Marcos, La Grange, Cuero, Burnet, Lockhart and Hallettsville.
Forecasters also warned that, over the next four days, rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches with isolated amounts up to 6 inches would be possible across parts of South and Central Texas.
“There is a potential for life-threatening flooding somewhere in the watch area,” the weather service said in announcing the flood watch. “Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.”
The weather service recommended that the public in the flood watch area should monitor storm forecasts and be alert for possible flood warnings.
Flood watches are issued when conditions that make flooding possible are expected soon, and the public should be prepared to take action. However, a flood warning means flooding in imminent or occurring.
