Denton City Council adopted its Vision Zero Action plan, similar to Dallas and Fort Worth. The goal is to improve roadway safety and eliminate traffic-related deaths by 2050.

Dallas has seen success in reducing traffic deaths on Loop 12 by redesigning parts of the road and more traffic enforcement. Fort Worth just put its plan into action last fall, with a focus on safer streets for kids.

Denton also approved two funding items related to the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant program through the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), which could provide nearly $12.72 million to support the implementation of projects identified in the plan that reduce the likelihood and severity of crashes.

One of the two funding actions authorized staff to submit an application for approximately $12 million through the 2026 SS4A grant program, which, if awarded, would support:

• Comprehensive road safety and ADA improvements on Hickory Street and Eagle Drive.

• Construction-ready safety and accessibility projects in High Injury Network (HIN) locations identified through Denton’s Vision Zero Action Plan.

• Intersection safety upgrades in areas with the highest safety risks or significant pedestrian and bicycle activity.

• Additional planning efforts, including Safe Routes to School updates, ADA accessibility improvements for streets and sidewalks, updates to the Denton ADA Transition Plan, and development of a new Transportation Transparency Dashboard.

The Council also approved the acceptance of a $720,000 SS4A reimbursement grant to advance several key planning initiatives, including:

• Analyzing crash data to identify key safety issues and trends, and conducting roadway safety audits on corridors identified within the HIN.

• Creating and maintaining an interactive crash dashboard and project website.

• Studying safety and connectivity along Windsor Drive at Loop 288, with a focus on bicycle and pedestrian needs.

• Developing quick build and long-term design concepts for priority corridor improvements.

• Engaging stakeholders across the city, region, and community throughout the process.

“Road safety is a top priority in the Denton community,” said Farhan Butt, Deputy Director of Transportation. “Adopting this plan strengthens our efforts to secure grant funding and focus improvements where they are needed most.”
