EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso Independent School District has a new police chief, and she is making some history for the district.

The district announced the appointment of Donica Pedregon as the new chief of police. She becomes the first woman to lead the department, EPISD said.

Pedregon brings more than 15 years of law enforcement experience to the role, including more than a decade of service with El Paso ISD Police Services, the district said.

“A U.S. Army combat veteran, Pedregon has steadily risen through the ranks of the department while building a reputation for leadership, mentorship, and a deep commitment to student safety,” the district said.

“It is truly an honor and privilege to serve as chief of police for the El Paso ISD Police Department,” Pedregon said. “My focus has always been, and will continue to be, protecting our students, staff, and community while supporting the dedicated men and women of this department. Together, we will lead with pride, integrity, accountability, and a commitment to excellence.”

Pedregon previously made history in 2021 as the first female sergeant in department history and again in 2024 when she became the district’s first female lieutenant.

Throughout her career, she has emphasized the importance of service, trust, and creating positive connections with students and staff across the district, EPISD said in its announcement.

Since joining El Paso ISD Police Services in 2014, Pedregon has served in multiple leadership and training roles, including field training officer and part-time instructor at the El Paso Community College Law Enforcement Academy, where she has helped mentor and train future law enforcement officers throughout the region.

El Paso ISD Police Services officers serve not only as law enforcement professionals, but also as mentors, educators, counselors, and first responders who help create safe and supportive learning environments across the district.

For Pedregon, the promotion represents more than a personal achievement, it is an opportunity to continue opening doors for others.

“As someone who has risen through the ranks of this department, it is the honor of a lifetime to now lead the outstanding men and women of the El Paso ISD Police Department,” Pedregon said. “I am committed to supporting our officers while continuing to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, accountability, and service to our schools and community.”
