EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about an increase in scam calls from individuals falsely claiming to be members of their office.
Callers are telling residents they have an active warrant and must make a payment immediately to avoid arrest, the Sheriff’s Office said.
In some cases, the callers are requesting payment over the phone, through text messages, or via mobile apps. These scammers may also “spoof” phone numbers to make it appear as though the call is coming from a legitimate law enforcement agency.
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office wants to make it clear: They will never call you to demand payment for a warrant, nor will they request payment over the phone, by text, or through any type of app.
Additionally, any call that creates a sense of urgency, threatens arrest, or pressures you to act immediately is a strong indicator of a scam, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Residents who receive these calls should not provide any personal or financial information and should hang up immediately.

The Sheriff’s Office urges the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
