The 2026 summer season is here, and if you’re looking for an affordable beach vacation, you won’t have to leave Texas to find one of the best budget-friendly destinations in the country. DRIFT Travel Magazine recently named South Padre Island the No. 1 most affordable destination for family summer vacations in 2026.
The digital travel and lifestyle publication, whose tagline is “travel often, live well,” ranked South Padre Island first on its list of the “10 Affordable Family Summer Vacation Destinations for 2026.” The best little beach in Texas was the only Texas destination to make the ranking, which included family vacation spots across the United States and Canada.
DRIFT Travel Magazine said South Padre Island earned the top spot because of its free public beaches, affordable hotels and lots of low-cost family attractions. The publication called the Texas beach destination a “Gulf Coast gem” for families planning a cheap summer vacation in 2026.
Among the free or low-cost attractions highlighted by the magazine are the historic Port Isabel Lighthouse, located just before the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway that links the mainland to South Padre Island, and the free Sandcastle Trail, an ever-changing collection of sand sculptures created by local artists.
Another standout destination — especially for nature lovers and birdwatchers — is the Laguna Madre Nature Trail behind the South Padre Island Convention Centre. Owned by Cameron County, the expansive network of boardwalks winds through wetlands habitat and leads visitors to shaded pavilions that extend over the Laguna Madre’s placid waters.
There’s plenty more to do on South Padre Island. Summertime is also the best time for visitors to catch a glimpse of endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtle hatchlings making their way toward the sea, enjoy a sunset during a guided horseback riding tour, hang ten at Isla Blanca Park, or get the adrenaline pumping at Gravity Park.
Other top affordable travel destinations include: Gulf Shores, Alabama; Williamsburg, Virginia; Seaside, Oregon; Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, Tennessee; Washington, D.C.; Branson, Missouri; Outer Banks, North Carolina; Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada; and San Juan, Puerto Rico.
