LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – Lexington Sporting Club is one win from the first championship in the club’s women’s history after a 2-0 victory over Dallas Trinity FC on Saturday night.
Sarah Griffith scored in the 40th minute and Catherine Barry added a second-half goal as Lexington controlled play early, putting five shots on target in the first half while holding Dallas without one.
Griffith opened the scoring when she gathered a loose ball after a corner kick and struck from outside the penalty area.
“I think off a corner, my role is to be at the top of the box and get any ball that comes out,” Griffith said. “Before the goal, I made an attempt, and I knew that it could come back to me, so I tried to put it away, and I did that.”
Barry made it 2-0 in the 51st, finishing a service from Alyssa Bourgeois for her 17th goal of the season.
Goalkeeper Kat Asman made four saves for her league-leading 12th clean sheet as Lexington advanced to the Gainbridge Super League final.
Head coach Kosuke Kimura said he was pleased with how his team handled the moment.
“The composure was off the wall,” Kimura said. “There was a lot of pressure with it being the playoffs … but the team as a whole was so brave.”
Defender Allison Pantuso said the win reflected the group’s season-long belief.
“I am so proud of this team,” Pantuso said. “We have been building and have known in us since the beginning of the season we could do this.”
Lexington will host the championship match Saturday, May 30, at 7 p.m. ET at Lexington SC Stadium against the winner of Sunday’s semifinal between Sporting Club JAX and Carolina Ascent FC.
