ANAHEIM, Calif. — Rangers shortstop Corey Seager’s comeback effort has hit a snag.
Seager’s inflamed lower back isn’t “where we wanted it to be” after a day of baseball activities, Rangers manager Skip Schumaker said before Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels at Angels Stadium, and the next steps of his progression are now delayed. The 32-year-old was originally scheduled to face a live pitcher Sunday, but “it’s not going to happen,” per Schumaker.
“I wouldn’t say it’s a setback yet,” Schumaker said. “The recovery wasn’t where we wanted it to be. We’re trying to figure out the next steps.”
Seager, sidelined since May 15 with what was originally classified as back spasms, jogged, hit in the cages and trained in the weight room prior to Friday’s series opener. He is eligible to be activated prior to Monday’s game vs. the Houston Astros at Globe Life Field, but will need to face live pitching before he returns.
