EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — As El Paso prepares for rising summer temperatures, local officials are reminding residents to take extra precautions to protect pets from dangerous heat conditions ahead of Heat Awareness Day on Friday, May 29.
El Paso Animal Services said pets are safest indoors with their families during periods of extreme heat. Under Texas law, dogs left outside must have adequate shelter that protects them from high temperatures, severe weather, and standing water, along with constant access to clean drinking water.
The warning comes as El Paso enters the hottest stretch of the year, when triple-digit temperatures can quickly create hazardous conditions for animals. Hot pavement and artificial turf can burn pets’ paws within minutes, especially during afternoon hours when surfaces can become significantly hotter than the air temperature.
Officials encourage pet owners to walk animals during cooler morning or evening hours and to watch for signs of heat exhaustion, including excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, lethargy, or collapse. Veterinarians say immediate medical attention is critical if symptoms appear.
As KTSM 9 News reported, El Paso has already experienced early-season heat advisories this spring, raising concerns about heat-related illnesses for both people and animals.
Animal advocates say simple precautions, including providing shade, water, and limiting outdoor exposure, can help prevent emergencies during the summer months.
