According to a drought contingency plan established in 2019 in Nueces County, stage 4 triggers emergency water shortage conditions, based on:

a. A significant water line breaks, or a pump or system failure occurs, which causes unprecedented loss of capability to provide water service; or

b. Water production or distribution system limitations; or

c. Natural or artificial contamination of the water supply occurs.

Corpus Christi city leaders met with the Nueces River Authority to discuss desalination and money on Monday.

At the center of it all: a $2.7 million non-refundable “reservation fee.” That’s what the River Authority wants from the city to lock in up to 50 million gallons a day from a future desalination plant on Harbor Island.

Desal projects could help guarantee Corpus Christi’s water future.
