The ceremony was meant to honor those who gave their lives defending the nation and to remind future generations that the freedoms Americans enjoy came at a cost.
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Families, veterans and community members gathered Monday at the Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery in Corpus Christi to honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country.
The Memorial Day ceremony was one of several events held across the Coastal Bend, bringing people together to reflect on the true meaning behind the holiday.

Rows of American flags lined the cemetery as music, prayers and moments of silence filled the grounds. For many in attendance, the ceremony was deeply personal.
Vietnam veteran Mike Sheehan said Memorial Day is a time to remember fellow service members who never made it home.
“From the 5th Infantry, there’s 540 of my brothers that did not make it back,” Sheehan said. “So Memorial Day is a day I remember those that did not return with us.”
Sheehan, who served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1970, said honoring the sacrifices of fallen troops is something Americans should never forget.
“You respect their sacrifice. You love the country, and I’m proud to be an American,” he said.
Others attending the ceremony reflected on historic battles and the heavy cost paid by generations of service members. One veteran urged people enjoying the holiday weekend to remember the sacrifices made on the beaches of Normandy during World War II.
“As you enjoy your day at the beach, remember Normandy was the real beach,” the veteran said.
For some families, Memorial Day also serves as a time to remember loved ones lost in service.
“I got several cousins that were lost,” one attendee shared.

The ceremony was hosted by Disabled American Veterans & Auxiliary and sponsored by the Corpus Christi Mayors Committee for Veterans Affairs and The Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery.
