EL PASO, Tx., May 26, 2026: Election Day for the March primary runoff election is today. The polls open at 8:00 am and close at 7:00 pm. Voters are casting ballots for the 168th District Court seat, County Court at Law No. 2., and on the Republican ticket the voters are selecting who will be on the ballot in November for Veronica Escobar’s seat. Rounding out our runoff elections are five Justice of Peace seats. The winners of the JP seats will go on to win today as there are no Republicans running in November for the JP courts.
Early Voting by the Numbers
There were 18,950 ballots cast during the six days of early voting that ended on Friday. Of those, there were 8,345 mail in ballots. This runoff election brought in 12 new voters who did not vote in March, suggesting that the voters whole will decide several elections were mobilized by the candidates to follow through with additional votes.
On the Republican side, there were 7,472 ballots cast. Of those, 6,957 went to the congressional District 16 Republican nominee. Three Republican voters were recently registered voters.
In the Justice of Peace races, there were 2,744 votes cast for the JP-1 seat between Denise Butterworth and Octavio Dominguez, and in JP-2, between incumbent Brian J. Haggerty and challenger Christie Saiz there were 2,380 ballots cast.
The highly controversial race for JP-5 between incumbent Lucilla “Lucy” Najera and challenger Dora Oaxaca drew 2,601 voters during the early voting period. This race has been punctuated by several controversies involving both candidates and a highly-charged social media tit-for-tat exchange.
Races to Watch
There are two races to keep an eye on as the ballots are counted. On the Republican side, there is the convicted felon Manny Barraza running against new-comer Adam Bauman for the Republican District 16 congressional seat on the November ballot.
A name recognition enigma is led by Enrique Holguin who did not actively campaign during the primary in March and performed little work during the early voting period for the 168th District Judge seat. Holguin, who is running against Bernardo Cruz, is apparently banking on voters confusing him for former City Representative Eddie Holguin to win the election.
