Texas Runoff Day: Cornyn vs. Paxton in GOP Senate showdown

  • May 26, 2026

(KWTX) – Polls are open and several key races from the March primary are headed to a runoff on Tuesday.

Among them, the closely watched race for U.S. Senate, with incumbent John Cornyn facing Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

KWTX spoke with Ashley Cruseturner, a history professor at McLennan Community College.

He says a sitting president endorsing a challenger against a senator who’s held the seat for more than 20 years is something that could end up in the history books.

He added—whoever President Donald Trump backs in the primary could gain a major advantage with Republican voters.

Cruseturner shares how this election will set up the playing field against Democrat James Talarico headed into November.

“It looks close, and I’m not going to say it’s not going to happen. It’s going to happen at some point—Texas is going to elect a Democrat to a statewide office sometime before it’s all over. It could be this time. The Talarico campaign—it seems very different. He’s a different kind of person. He’s got appeal in a lot of different areas,” Cruseturner said.

He believes another race to watch is the Republican runoff for Texas Attorney General—Congressman Chip Roy versus State Senator Mayes Middleton.

He notes the AG’s office has increasingly become a stepping stone to national politics.
