The skyline in Plano could eventually look different after approval of a 280-foot tower at AT&T’s future headquarters.
PLANO, Texas — Plano’s skyline could be changing. A major piece of AT&T’s move from Dallas to Plano is moving forward after Plano leaders approved plans tied to the company’s future headquarters campus.
The Plano City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved rezoning for a 1.4-acre tract at the southeast corner of Legacy Drive and Parkwood Boulevard, clearing the way for a planned tower that could rise as high as 280 feet as part of AT&T’s new campus.
The approved agenda item establishes development standards for a plaza featuring a sculptural structure that incorporates “stealth commercial antennas.” The tower also would be topped with AT&T’s logo.
City documents tied to the project include restrictions on lighting. The structure will not use flashing, strobing, rotating or chasing light effects between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., except as required by the Federal Aviation Administration.
The tower is one component of AT&T’s broader plans for its new 54-acre global headquarters campus at 5400 Legacy Drive in Plano. The project is part of AT&T’s previously announced move out of downtown Dallas.
Plans for the new headquarters include at least 2 million square feet of office, retail and amenity space. A pedestrian bridge across Parkwood Boulevard is also proposed, creating a connection between the campus plaza and the Shops at Legacy to the west.
In February, Plano City Council also approved a major incentive package to bring AT&T to the city. The agreement includes up to $20 million in economic incentives, including funding tied to redevelopment and job creation. The city also approved a long-term property tax rebate agreement.
In exchange, AT&T is required to invest at least $1.35 billion in construction costs, build the 2 million-square-foot campus, occupy the campus for at least 25 years and create 10,000 jobs by the end of 2039.
