AUSTIN, Texas (KLTV/KTRE) – Two East Texas softball teams will be competing for a state championship in Austin this week at Red and Charline McCombs Field.
Bullard is playing in the Class 4A Division I game, while Brookeland is playing in the Class 1A game.
Bullard is making its first appearance in the state title game after reaching the semifinals in 2021 and 2022. Following a 26-7-1 regular season campaign, the Lady Panthers have gone undefeated in the postseason to reach a 36-7-1 overall record. Bullard swept Vidor in the bi-district round, winning 10-0 and 5-2. Bullard swept Huffman-Hargrave in the area round, winning 2-0 and 10-7. In the regional semifinals, Bullard swept Sealy, winning 8-5 and 6-5. In the regional final against an East Texas opponent, Livingston, the Lady Panthers won in two games, 3-2 and 8-1. In the state semifinals, Bullard knocked off the three-time defending state champions, Corpus Christi Calallen, in two games, winning 3-2 and 5-4. Bullard plays Prosper Richland on Friday at 10 a.m.
Brookeland is in the Class 1A state title game for the second straight season. The Lady Cats went 10-3 in the regular season and have not dropped a game in the postseason to achieve a 17-3 overall record. Brookeland beat Martinsville 15-0 in the bi-district round before sweeping Apple Springs in the area round, 16-2 and 15-1. In the regional semifinals, Brookeland swept Slocum, winning 4-3 and 6-5. The Lady Cats beat Avery 17-0 in the regional final and walked it off against Moulton in the state semifinals, winning 6-5 in eight innings. Last year, Brookeland faced Jonesboro in the championship game and fell 9-8. The Lady Cats get their rematch on Saturday at 10 a.m.
