EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — The El Paso Fire Department Fire Marshal’s Office has determined that a fire at a vacant property near Dyer Street and Lincoln Avenue last week was intentionally set, officials confirmed.

Fire crews responded to the Condition 2 blaze around 5:30 a.m. in central El Paso on May 22.

By later in the morning, firefighters had knocked down the fire and remained at the scene checking for hotspots.

No injuries were reported.

According to the El Paso Fire Department, the property had previously been the site of other fires and was already known to have safety concerns.

Officials said older visible burn marks at the location were connected to a prior incident. At the time of the fire, the building was considered vacant or abandoned.

Neighbors in the area said the property had been a recurring problem and claimed squatters had been seen at the location in the past. Residents also reported previous fires at the building.

Following Friday’s incident, the Fire Marshal’s Office declared the structure an “imminent danger” and referred the case to the City of El Paso’s Building Department for further evaluation and any necessary action.

The fire remains under investigation, and officials said any additional information must be requested through the open records process.
