EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Downtown El Paso will celebrate the legacy of Tejano icon Selena with music, food, and local culture during the upcoming Selena & Salsa Market at Union Plaza on Saturday, May 30.
The free community event, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., will feature local vendors, regional food, live entertainment, and interactive activities centered around Selena’s enduring influence on Latino music and fashion.
Organizers said guests can expect salsa tastings, handmade goods, drinks, and a Selena look-alike contest as Downtown El Paso continues to expand its lineup of family-friendly cultural events.
A live tribute performance by Jezzika Sax is expected to headline the event, celebrating Selena’s catalog of hits that helped bring Tejano music into the mainstream during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Selena, often referred to as the “Queen of Tejano,” became internationally known through her hit songs such as “Como La Flor,” “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom,” and “Amor Prohibido.” Her posthumous crossover album, “Dreaming of You,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 1995 and remains one of the most influential Latin albums of its time.
The celebration will begin a day earlier at the Mexican American Cultural Center with “Selena Sparkle Photos” on Friday, May 29, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The pre-event activity invites attendees to decorate Selena-inspired photos using glitter, rhinestones, sequins, and other craft materials.
Admission to the Selena & Salsa Market is free and open to the public.
