EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Documents reveal that after a robbery, the suspect slipped from police after a standoff in El Paso’s Segundo Barrio, but was ultimately done in by a beer can he left behind at the scene.

On May 19, officers with the El Paso Police Department arrested 57-year-old Rodolfo Madrid Torres and charged him with aggravated robbery after an investigation revealed that on May 6, Torres had allegedly entered a cellphone store located on the 900 block of S. Stanton Street, assaulted the 73-year-old owner and stole some money, triggering a brief standoff with police.

KFOX14/CBS4 obtained documents that show that Torres was identified as the suspect after investigators reviewed surveillance video from outside the cellphone store and reportedly saw that Torres had left an unopened beer can at the scene with his fingerprints.

According to the complaint affidavit, investigators reportedly saw on surveillance video that Torres put an object down outside the store before walking in.

Investigators said they went back to check if the object was still there and they said they found an unopened 32-oz can of Milwaukee’s Best Beer, which had fingerprints that matched Torres.

According to the affidavit, investigators said they had seen Torres in the area of the robbery.

The affidavit also describes what Torres allegedly did during the robbery.

According to the affidavit, Torres allegedly walked into the store, pulled the store owner by her hair, and placed her in a chokehold, asking her where the money was.

Speaking with investigators, the store owner told them Torres appeared to be intoxicated, saying he had trouble keeping his balance.

The affidavit lists Torres allegedly stole:

The police standoff started after the store owner told the officers that she had locked Torres in the shop.

However, before the SWAT team arrived, Torres had left the store through a back door, according to the affidavit.

Jail records show Torres has been in jail since May 20 under a $20,000 bond.
