One of Texas’ top elementary schools says goodbye to the principal who helped build it

Dr. Kimberly Bissell is retiring after 36 years in education, leaving behind a campus ranked among the best in the state.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Dr. Kimberly Bissell spent her final day at Windsor Park Elementary surrounded by hugs, laughter and students asking for one last autograph.

After 36 years in education and 15 years leading Windsor Park Elementary, Bissell is officially retiring, closing the book on a career that left a major mark on one of the top-ranked elementary schools in Texas.

On the last day of school, the hallways felt more like a celebrity meet-and-greet than a retirement sendoff.

“Can you sign on his stomach?” one student asked while holding a stuffed bunny rabbit as classmates crowded around the longtime principal.

Students say Bissell always made them feel supported.

“She’s been really cool, like a really nice principal,” said Windsor Park student Bradley McComb. “She helps us if we need any kind of help with anything.”  McComb happens to be the grandson of former Mayor Joe McComb who actually attended Windsor Park back in the day.

Back in her office, boxes were stacked as Bissell packed up years of memories.

“I’m retiring because my husband has been bothering me to retire so we can hit our bucket list,” Bissell joked.

The emotions continued in the hallways as Bissell shared hugs and memories with staff members, including custodian Sylvia Rios.

“We have done so much together,” Rios told her through tears. “I’m going to miss you a lot.”

Bissell began her education career 36 years ago and also spent time teaching in Calallen before becoming principal at Windsor Park.

Teacher Melissa Martinez, who has spent 35 years in education herself, said Bissell stands out among the many administrators she has worked with.

“She’s a wonderful woman, wonderful person, and I’ve learned so much from her,” Martinez said.

Bissell says Windsor Park has meant everything to her.

“I am really fortunate to have had 15 amazing years at Windsor Park,” she said. “It means everything to me.”

As she walked through the campus one final time, students once again surrounded her for hugs and signatures, giving the longtime principal a sendoff worthy of a school superstar.

Windsor Park Elementary is currently ranked the number three elementary school in the state of Texas.
