Tuesday’s race marked the end of a prolonged, bruising primary season for the Republican nomination. Cornyn led slightly in the March primary, but that edge was undercut in part by President Donald Trump’s late endorsement of Paxton. The attorney general now advances to the November general election against Democrat James Talarico.
Across the state, the Republican runoff drew about 36% fewer votes than the primary. In Dallas County, participation dropped slightly less, a 30% decrease.
Paxton’s victory notably included stronger support from Texas’ metro areas, a stronghold for Cornyn in the primary. Paxton also carried most every rural county.
In Dallas County, Cornyn’s support was strongest in the Lakewood neighborhood and the Park Cities. He also carried a few precincts in South Dallas with low voter turnout.
Most of the county’s other precincts were carried by Paxton or were close to an even split.
