FRISCO, Texas (KCBD) – Texas Tech’s Joey McGuire provided updates on the Red Raiders and more from the Big 12 Football Spring Business Meeting on Thursday.
McGuire didn’t hold back on how much he wants to play Texas after Longhorn coach Steve Sarkisian made some recent comments about the Red Raiders.
Texas Tech is offering to play and host Texas on Sept. 5, meaning it would buyout Abilene Christian. Texas would then also have to buyout Texas State. He said conversations have been made to even meet the Longhorns in Arlington at AT&T Stadium.

Texas Tech Chairman of the Board Regents Cody Campbell took to X to even make things more interesting.
In the future, McGuire said he hopes an announcement for a 2027 power four conference opponent will be announced in the next two weeks.
Texas Tech is looking for power conference opponents for 2028 and 2029. McGuire kept the boldness alive saying he would love to play Texas and Notre Dame those years. Making it more interesting, Texas and Notre Dame’s series is “tentatively” on the schedule, Texas AD Chris Del Conte recently said.
Moving on to his Red Raiders, McGuire addressed the Brendan Sorsby investigation saying he’s proud of Sorsby for getting help for his gambling addiction. He added that he knows he made a mistake and that it should lead to a punishment, but he doesn’t think Sorsby should be penalized for the whole season.
Leading on from that, McGuire said QB Will Hammond is recovering well from a torn ACL. He said Hammond was throwing before Spring Break and his clear date is Aug. 21
He will get to throw in 7-on-7 drills next week as well. However, they will not push him to fully go week one against ACU.
