Democrat Nathan Johnson and Republican Mayes Middleton won their respective parties’ runoffs for state attorney general Tuesday, competing against each other in November to replace Ken Paxton.
The candidates also both carried Dallas County, but by notably different margins than at the state level.
Middleton beat U.S. Rep. Chip Roy of Austin, closing a primary season marked by deeply personal attacks.
Middleton won most counties in North Texas and the Houston area, while Roy took his hometown of Austin and surrounding counties in the Hill Country.
In Dallas County, Middleton won by a slimmer margin than at the state level, taking 52% of the vote compared with 55% statewide. The Park Cities tipped toward Roy, but many precincts in the county were competitive, excluding those with particularly low turnout.

On the Democratic side, Johnson easily beat former Galveston Mayor Joe Jaworski, carrying all of Texas’ major metro areas.
In his hometown of Dallas, Johnson took nearly every precinct in the county, winning with 75% of the vote.
