As Texas continues to attract new residents, several Lone Star cities are standing out for something beyond growth.
A new SmartAsset report ranking the safest midsize cities in America found nine Texas cities cracked the national top 100, with Central Texas communities leading the way. The 2026 report analyzed 333 cities with populations between 65,000 and 250,000 residents. Rankings were based on four factors, including violent crime rates, property crime rates, motor vehicle fatality rates and FEMA natural disaster risk scores.
Among the four top-rated Texas cities that made the list, Georgetown ranked highest at No. 27 nationally, making it the safest midsize city in the state. College Station followed closely behind at No. 28, while Round Rock ranked No. 53 nationally. New Braunfels also landed inside the national top 100, ranking No. 63 overall and fourth among Texas cities included in the study.

According to the report, New Braunfels recorded 1.56 violent crimes per 1,000 residents and 12.84 property crimes per 1,000 residents. The city’s motor vehicle fatality rate was 13.40 per 100,000 residents, while FEMA categorized the area’s natural disaster risk as “relatively moderate.”
SmartAsset noted that while no city is entirely risk-free, some midsize communities “offer residents a stronger sense of everyday security than others.” The study also found inland states dominated the rankings, with 15 of the top 20 safest midsize cities located outside coastal areas.

At the top of the national rankings was Broomfield, which SmartAsset named the safest midsize city in America. The Colorado city posted below-average violent and property crime rates, 1.5 and 19 per 1,000 residents, respectively, along with a motor vehicle fatality rate of about five per 100,000 residents. Broomfield was also the only city in the study to receive a FEMA natural disaster risk rating of “very low.”
At the other end of the rankings was Little Rock, which finished last overall in the national study due to high violent and property crime rates, elevated disaster risk and above-average traffic fatality rates.
