A Dallas police sergeant died Friday from injuries he suffered in an off-duty plane crash earlier this month, the department said.
Sgt. Joshua Boykin was aboard a single-engine plane with two other off-duty officers when it crash-landed near Forney the early morning of May 16. The other officers were injured and continue to recover while Boykin remained in critical condition in a Dallas hospital.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Joshua’s family, loved ones, friends, and fellow officers as they navigate this unimaginable loss,” Sgt. Sean Pease, president of the Dallas Police Association, said in a statement. “We ask the community to join us in praying for comfort, strength, and peace for all who knew and loved him.”
His death comes as an investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration into the crash was ongoing. The agency’s preliminary inquiry blamed engine failure for causing the plane to crash into a field.
The Dallas Police Association, the city’s largest police union, was seeking donations to support Boykin and his family. As of Friday, the online fundraiser showed they had raised more than $65,000.
Allison Hudson, a Dallas police spokesperson, announced Boykin’s death Friday during an unrelated news conference at Jack Evans Police Headquarters. She said police leaders were headed to the hospital afterward.
