DALLAS — Search operations have been suspended at the site of a burned-down Oak Cliff apartment, Dallas Fire-Rescue announced Friday afternoon.

The Clyde Apartments near the Bishop Arts District caught fire shortly before 1 p.m. on Thursday after a gas leak caused an explosion. Dallas Fire-Rescue reached the scene in two minutes, and the blaze quickly grew to a 5-alarm fire.

Three people are confirmed dead: two females and one child of unknown gender. Three people were taken to the hospital with one in stable but critical condition. Two people took themselves to the hospital with minor injuries.

First responders used a drone, dogs and hand tools to search the site for victims. Dallas Fire-Rescue Chief Justin Ball said everyone has been accounted for to their knowledge, with no one asking where their loved ones are.

Now, officials are tackling housing and an investigation. The city has provided hotels to displaced residents of the 23-unit apartment, of which 19 units housed families. Officials are searching for permanent units for families.

Dallas Fire-Rescue and federal officials will lead an investigation into the explosion and fire. An official with the Department of Transportation and Public Works said Thursday that the city had no active work in the right of way by the apartment. Atmos Energy said in a statement that the fire department informed them of a non-Atmos construction crew damaging a natural gas pipeline near 409 E. 9th St.

The city said Clyde Apartment’s owner and management team are working with fire investigators and trying to help displaced tenants.

Geoff Henley, the property’s attorney, told Spectrum News that a pending buyer of the site, O-SDA Industries, LLC, ordered a soil test to prepare for new construction. He said the buyer’s engineering firm, Engineering Consultant Services (ECS), performed the test, and either they or an excavation company called “Barbar” struck an Atmos gas line while boring.

“We have spoken directly to the fire investigators and asked if ECS or someone else did a locate and have not provided that information,” Henley said. “If someone did not do a proper line locate here, it is beyond egregious. There is a lot of information unfolding right now, and we will actively keep you posted.”
