It seems each time the beloved “Spurs nuns” attend a playoff game, San Antonio wins. With a pivotal Game 7 against the Oklahoma City Thunder looming and a ticket to the NBA Finals on the line, Spurs fans are trying to find a way to make sure the team gets some divine help.
A fan by the name of Andrew, who goes by @a.leestudios on Instagram, posted his plea, calling on Dallas-based Southwest Airlines to fly the sisters to Oklahoma City. “This message is for the marketing team and the president and CEO at Southwest Airlines. If you’re not them, keep scrolling,” he said. “Guys, right now you have about 24 hours to pull off one of the greatest marketing stunts of all time.”
“You need to grab those nuns, put them on a plane and get them to Oklahoma City by 6:30 on Saturday afternoon,” he continued. “You put those nuns on a plane; you call it ‘nun-stop service to OKC.’ The internet will literally burn to the ground. Please make this happen. We need the nuns in OKC.”
It seems Andrew’s wish may be answered, as the airline chimed in with a comment: “I think we may be able to do something. Nuns—here we come!” And it may not be just a joke, either. Under an Instagram post where the sisters showed off their Spurs jerseys after attending Thursday night’s blowout Game 6 that forced an extension of the series, Southwest Airlines commented, “Flights to game 7 on us? Check your voicemail! 😊🏀”
It’s hard to say whether the sisters will actually attend. After the Game 4 win (the one where the sisters blessed devout Catholic Luke Kornet before the game) fans wanted some of that good luck to cross state lines, but the nuns opted to host a watch party from San Antonio on Tuesday instead.
Sister Sydney Moss told the Express-News that several groups offered to send them to Game 5, but they wanted to stay back and host a community event on the Westside.
“We asked, could you instead help us do something for the Westside?” Moss said. “This is where we’ve always been in San Antonio. This is our school, St. John Bosco.”
Either way, we know we have some passionate fans back home.
The viral “Spurs nuns” are more properly known as the Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco, a Catholic elementary school on San Antonio’s Westside. They’ve been Spurs fans for decades, stretching back to the early days of the Tim Duncan era. Sister Bernadette Mota, a former youth basketball coach, told the Express-News that the nuns got into the Spurs to better connect with young people, who are the focus of their ministry.
