National Geographic just can’t get enough of the Texas Hill Country. After shining a spotlight in early May on Comfort, the historic antique-lover’s village just north of Boerne, the renowned travel magazine turned its attention to Fredericksburg, including the tourist hotspot in its roundup of the 17 most charming small towns in the United States.
Fredericksburg, located 70 miles from San Antonio, earned praise from the magazine for its “evolving” food scene and German-European flair.
The repeated recognition from the iconic outlet hints at what locals in the region have known for some time — and often quietly hope the rest of the country won’t find out too quickly. As rapid development continues to spread through the Texas Hill Country, even once sleepy towns are quickly becoming national travel destinations.
Fredericksburg’s blend of Texan and German cultures is especially evident through its food and drink, according to the publication. National Geographic even claims the small town is the “best place to sip a crisp German beer in the Southwest.”
Altstadt Brewery, Otto’s German Bistro and Signor Vineyards got a shoutout from the travel experts, thanks to their authentic, farm-to-table — and perhaps, vine-to-bottle — style experiences. Duck schnitzel, it seems, is also part of the charm.
For a dose of culture, the Pioneer Museum on West Main Street showcases what daily life was like for the German farmers who settled in the area in 1846, through the exploration of historic buildings, hundreds of artifacts, and audio and virtual experiences.
Beyond restaurants and breweries, the small town, set along U.S. Highway 290, has also become a top-notch winery destination, attracting roughly two million visitors a year.
Nat Geo published the list in coordination with the release of its new book, Small Towns U.S.A., a guide to 100 small-town getaways in the U.S., and Fredericksburg is the only town in the Lone Star State to get a mention on the list. Camden, Maine; Amelia Island, Florida; Highlands, North Carolina; and Mackinac Island, Michigan also appeared on the list.
For locals in the Texas Hill Country, the recognition likely comes as no surprise, but for others, it could be a sign to book a sign to book your next getaway.
