From “Michael” to “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” massive audience turnout just pushed Plano-based Cinemark to its biggest domestic May box office in history.
PLANO, Texas — Plano-based Cinemark Holdings, Inc. announced Monday that it delivered its highest-ever domestic box office performance for the month of May, driven by a diverse slate of blockbusters and strong audience turnout.
May was a strong month for the domestic box office. Major wide releases included “Michael,” which has grossed nearly $340 million domestically, and “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” which has brought in more than $209 million, according to Box Office Mojo. Other top contributors included “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu,” “Mortal Kombat II,” “The Sheep Detectives,” and the horror film “Backrooms,” which marked Cinemark’s biggest horror opening day of all time.

“We are proud to have achieved an all-time high May box office, driven by a compelling slate of releases from our studio partners, strong moviegoer demand for larger-than-life, cinematic experiences and our team’s outstanding execution to maximize the opportunity,” said Sean Gamble, Cinemark President and CEO.
Beyond ticket sales, the local theater giant also reported record-breaking food and beverage results, including its highest-ever per-person spending for the month of May.
Gamble noted that the momentum reflects a healthy interest in the theatrical experience, particularly among younger moviegoers.
“Audiences are showing up for a wide range of content, with particular strength in younger moviegoers, resulting in impressive performances across blockbusters and varied small- to mid-tier titles,” Gamble said.

The company looks to maintain this momentum with several highly anticipated upcoming releases, including:
“Toy Story 5″ — June 19″Supergirl” — June 26″Minions & Monsters” — July 1″Moana” — July 10
Cinemark recently announced the return of its popular Summer Movie Clubhouse program, offering affordable tickets to select family-friendly movies. From June 1 to Aug. 6, tickets to 10 movies will be priced at $1.75 each, including “Paddington,” “A Minecraft Movie” and “KPop Demon Hunters Sing-Along.”
Plano-based Cinemark, one of the world’s largest theatrical exhibition companies, operates 301 theaters and 4,219 screens across 42 states.
