Texas A&M baseball’s season ended Monday in the NCAA Tournament regionals, quietly dropping a second-straight game to USC 7-1.
The heralded Aggie offense failed to make any sort of dent in the Trojans’ pitching staff. They held the A&M (41-16) bats to six hits and a single home run by catcher Bear Harrison. A&M’s trio of potential MLB draftees – Caden Sorrell, Gavin Grahovac and Chris Hacopien – went a combined 1-for-12 in their plate appearances.Â

A&M right-handed pitcher Clayton Freshcorn, making his first career start, did all he could to keep his team in the game. He hung around for 6 â…” innings and threw 101 total pitches, both career highs. He held the bats to two runs through six innings before Augie Lopez blasted a three-run home run in the seventh that extended USC’s lead to 5-1. Lopez went 2-for-4 in his plate appearances with five RBIs.Â
USC had 12 hits to A&M’s six. The Trojans even stranded more runners, leaving 10 on while the Aggies left six. USC pitcher Chase Herrell collected the win, going 3 ⅔ innings, striking out two and allowing no runs on three hits.

A&M started the regional strong, picking up a 7-5 win over Lamar and decimating Texas State 17-2. USC lost its first game but got red-hot at just the right time, scoring double-digit runs in three of its last four wins. It’ll travel to face North Carolina in the upcoming super regionals.

Left-hander Cooper Powell takes the mound for Lyons. Partida makes a leaping grab for the first out. Basseer is retired on strikes. Riske walks. Carpentier flies out, and A&M is down to its final three outs.
Pinch-hitter Blake Binderup reaches first as Carpentier misses a throw to first base. Grahovac grounds into a fielder’s choice; Binderup is out at second. Basseer steals a base hit away from Sorrell on a diving catch. Hacopien singles up the middle. Left-hander Sax Matson steps to the mound for USC. Duer grounds out to end the inning.

USC infielder Maddox Riske singles up the middle. Carpentier reaches first on a fielder’s choice. Urbon doubles down the right field line. A&M intentionally walks Covarrubias to load the bases. Right-hander Gavin Lyons enters the game. Grahovac makes a diving play on a grounder, but his throw home pulls the catcher off the plate. Duer catches a flyball in left, but he drops it on the transfer.Â
The third base runner takes advantage, beating the throw home. Partida makes a snag at third to strand two Trojans. Â

Urbon grounds out. Covarrubias draws a walk. Adrien Lopez lines a single into center. Augie Lopez crushes a three-run blast over the right-field wall, extending USC’s lead to 5-1. Takeuchi flies out to right. The Aggies bring left-hander Shane Sdao in as relief. Cadena lasers a single into right field. Basseer goes down on strikes.
Hacopien flies out to right. Duer singles up the third base line. Partida grounds into a double-play to end the brief threat.

Cadena grounds out to second. Basseer fouls out to right. Lamb bunts for a hit, beating the shift to the first base side. Carpentier pops out to second.
USC sends right-hander Chase Herrell to the mound. A pitch hits Harrison, and he takes first. Kellner advances him to second with a sacrifice bunt. Grahovac strikes out swinging, as does Sorrell.

Carpentier finds a gap in shallow center for a lead-off single. Urbon lays down the sacrifice bunt to advance Carpentier to second. Covarrubias ropes a single into left center to tie the game. Adrien Lopez strikes out swinging. Covarrubias barely beats out Harrison’s throw to steal second. Augie Lopez records another RBI single to give USC the lead. Freshcorn catches the outside corner with a fastball for a strikeout.Â
Hacopien draws a leadoff walk. Duer goes down swinging. Partida takes strike three looking. Royo singles and Hacopien stops at second. Wilson grounds into the shift, but he makes it to first. Hacopien tries to run home in the confusion, but he’s easily gunned down for the third out.

Takeuchi leads off the fourth with a single into left. Kellner makes a diving stop at short to steal an extra base hit and gets Takeuchi out at second. Freshcorn records his third strikeout on a slider. Lamb grounds out to first.
Outfielder Jorian Wilson grounds into the right field shift and is out at first. Catcher Bear Harrison catches a hanging slider and sends over the left-center field wall for a solo home run. Govel walks Kellner. He recovers to strike out Grahovac. Govel grabs a short chopper and slings it to first for the third out.
