A Miller High School ROTC student was honored after rescuing a woman from a burning mobile home and is now preparing for Army service.
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A Miller High School ROTC student is being recognized as a local hero after using his training and quick thinking to save a woman from a burning mobile home earlier this year.
Back in March, Cody Lankford rushed into action when he encountered a mobile home fire and helped rescue a woman trapped inside. City leaders say his actions likely saved a life and demonstrated courage far beyond his years.

During a recent Corpus Christi City Council meeting, officials publicly recognized Lankford for his bravery, presenting him with praise for his selfless actions and commitment to helping others during a dangerous situation.
Mayor Paulette Guajardo addressed Lankford during the recognition ceremony, highlighting the impact his actions had on both the victim and the community.
“Your actions and aspirations embody honor. They embody integrity and a committed sense of duty that inspire all who hear your story,” Guajardo said. “The City of Corpus Christi extends its sincere appreciation and gratitude for your heroic efforts and proudly recognizes you for the outstanding example you have set for our community.”
Family members say Lankford’s commitment to service will continue beyond high school. The Miller ROTC student is scheduled to ship out in September to begin serving in the United States Army.
The recognition serves as a reminder that acts of heroism often happen unexpectedly and that sometimes those stepping forward are students using lessons learned in the classroom to make a life-saving difference in the real world.
