AUSTIN, Texas — A major change is now in effect for Texans seeking a commercial driver license, as all CDL and commercial learner’s permit knowledge exams are now being administered exclusively in English.

The Texas Department of Public Safety announced the change took effect June 1 and aligns state testing procedures with federal English language proficiency requirements established by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Previously, commercial driver knowledge exams in Texas were available in both English and Spanish. Under the updated rules, all written and automated knowledge exams must now be completed in English, and interpreters will no longer be allowed during testing.

State officials say the change is designed to ensure newly licensed commercial drivers have the communication skills needed to safely operate large vehicles and comply with federal transportation standards.  The hands-on portion of CDL testing, includes pre-trip inspections, basic vehicle controls skills, and road testing has already been conducted only in English.

DPS says English language proficiency evaluations will continue during routine traffic stops and inspections at weigh stations. Commercial drivers who fail to meet the required proficiency standards may be placed out of service.

Updated study material and the Texas Commercial Motor Vehicles Driver’s Handbook remain available free of charge through the DPS website.
