WATCH LIVE: Discussion over Corpus Christi’s proposed Inner Harbor desalination plant stretched late into Tuesday night as city leaders continued debating one of the project’s most closely watched components: the far-field study.
Corpus Christi City Council spent hours hearing presentations from scientists, taking public comment and discussing the study’s findings during a meeting at City Hall that extended well beyond its scheduled timeframe.
The far-field study is considered a critical factor in determining whether the city moves forward with the proposed desalination plant. It examines how brine discharged from the facility could affect salinity levels and environmental conditions in surrounding bay waters over time.
Scientists who presented the findings described the projected changes to salinity levels as minimal and said the study showed limited impacts to the bay system.
The study has been one of the final pieces of information many council members said they wanted before making a decision on the project. However, several council members and committee participants said they still have concerns and believe questions remain about the long-term effects of the facility.
As of late Tuesday night, no final action had been taken and discussion was ongoing.
