As coastal communities prepare for another hurricane season, Corpus Christi emergency officials are giving residents an opportunity to practice what a real evacuation could look like before severe weather threatens the area.

The city is organizing a hurricane evacuation exercise Friday at the Corpus Christi Gym on Cabaniss Parkway, bringing together emergency personnel, partner agencies, and community volunteers for a large-scale preparedness event.

Officials say the exercise is intended to test emergency procedures used during evacuations while helping residents become more familiar with what happens when a storm forces people to leave vulnerable areas.

Community members are encouraged to participate by acting as evacuees throughout the exercise. Emergency managers say public participation provides valuable insight into how evacuation plans function under realistic conditions and helps agencies identify areas that may need improvement before an actual emergency occurs.

Officials say pets are welcome during the exercise as emergency planning often involves making arrangements for every member of the household.

Preparedness officials stress that hurricane readiness goes beyond knowing evacuation routes. Residents are encouraged to review emergency plans with family members, gather disaster supplies, and make transportation arrangements before storms develop.

Hurricane season officially runs from June through November, with peak activity typically occurring later in the summer.

Emergency officials say exercises like this are designed to improve coordination and ensure both responders and residents are better prepared if a major storm threatens the Coastal Bend.
