EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Filmmakers, artists, and moviegoers from across the Borderplex will gather in downtown El Paso next week for the 2026 edition of The Femme Frontera Film Festival.

The festival highlights films created by women and gender-expansive filmmakers from the U.S./Mexico border region and beyond.

The four-day festival is scheduled for June 11 through June 14, at the El Paso Mexican American Cultural Center and the historic Plaza Theatre.

Organizers said the event will feature a diverse lineup of films that explore perspectives and experiences often underrepresented in mainstream media, while creating opportunities for community dialogue through storytelling.

The festival’s return reinforces El Paso’s growing reputation as a hub for independent and borderland filmmaking.

Founded in 2016 by women and gender-expansive filmmakers from El Paso, Las Cruces, and Ciudad Juárez, Femme Frontera was established to support creators navigating barriers within the film industry while amplifying stories rooted in border communities.

Over the past decade, the organization has expanded beyond film screenings to offer mentorship, education programs, project funding, and professional development opportunities for emerging filmmakers.

Its mission focuses on increasing access and visibility for women and gender-expansive BIPOC filmmakers and fostering cross-border creative collaboration.

Many of the selected works challenge perceptions surrounding border communities, immigration, identity, race, and gender.

Festival organizers said all programs will include on-site American Sign Language (ASL) and Spanish Sign Language (SSL) services, helping make screenings and events more accessible to attendees.

As El Paso continues to celebrate its unique cultural identity and creative community, the festival offers residents an opportunity to experience stories that reflect both local experiences and global perspectives through the lens of independent filmmaking.
