SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — A legal dispute over cell phone policy appears to be resolved, and this will allow North East ISD to avoid a state-appointed conservator.
The Texas Education Agency had threated to take that action after months of controversy over the district’s student cell phone policy.
Beginning last year, state law prohibited students from using cell phones during the school day, and most districts, including San Antonio ISD, complied. But NEISD chose to interpret the term ‘school day’ to mean cell phones could be used at certain times while instruction was not taking place.
TEA disagreed, and NEISD doubled-down on the policy until April, at which point the policy was revised.
As of the coming school year, students in the district will not be allowed to use cell phones bell-to-bell.
A growing number of school districts around the United States have been banning cell phones in public schools, and many private schools have adopted similar measures.
