San Antonio Spurs this, New York Knicks that, blah blah blah … What about Chili’s on 45th and Lamar? At Game 1 of the NBA finals, Austin-based comedian Shane Gillis reminded us what’s more important in life: Triple Dippers.
Gillis was spotted at Frost Bank Center for the first face-off between the Spurs and the Knicks. But he wasn’t sporting either team’s colors, instead showing up in a simple black T-shirt with the Chili’s logo and “45th & Lamar” underneath the famed pepper.
The Austin-based comedian knows his local dining scene. The Chili’s located on 45th Street and Lamar Boulevard in Austin has been a long-running local joke, the quippy answer to, “My parents/grandma/childhood best friend is in town, where should I take them to eat?” In a city of ever-opening restaurants, there’s nothing more comforting or satisfying than a cold El Presidente margarita and a full rack of ribs.
It’s unclear where Gillis, who was at the game with Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast co-host Matt McCusker, got the shirt. But Y2KTees.com sells what seems to be the same one in a multitude of colors for the low price of $19.99. It is nice to see him repping Austin in some way, even if he is on record saying “Texas f–king blows.”
Gillis has been spotted courtside at several Spurs games before, though he is perhaps best known for being a Philadelphia Eagles fan. He does have strong basketball opinions, however, having recently downplayed Michael Jordan’s 1982 UNC title-winning shot. So, he clearly knows ball and Chicken Crispers.
Unfortunately, the Knicks bested the Spurs in Game 1, 105-95. But Chili’s at 45th and Lamar endures forever.
