ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – The Food Bank of West Central Texas held its first Senior Resource Day on Thursday. Information on local resources, including organizations offering healthcare services, housing assistance and more, was available as people came through the drive-thru food pantry.
Patrick Dembach, Director of Operations for the Food Bank, said this is something they have been thinking about for years.
“We’ve always understood the problem faced by seniors, especially those who are homebound,” Demback said. “So, we’re hoping that this not only reaches people who can get out, but those who cannot get out may get assistance from friends, neighbors, family members, whomever, and so that’s what our goal is.”
The first Thursday of every month, from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., will be senior-focused at the food bank.
“Income eligibility, that’s the one requirement. Fifty-five and over is the desire, but anybody else who shows up and there may be a need, we’re certainly going to welcome them,” Deback said. “We don’t deny anyone who needs food.”
In addition to first Thursdays, the food bank has general distribution from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. on second Saturdays, and from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. on third Mondays.
“We chose hours when the other resources were at a minimum,” Demback said. “So, we are now available to cover that little gap.”
